I recently attended the Gay Wedding Show in Brighton and in the lead up I decided that I would make the ultimate expression of what is available as options for women who don’t want the traditional white wedding dress and yet, feel equally uncomfortable in a shapeless men’s (butch) style suit. I can, and do make masculine style bespoke suits for women but they are not as in demand as a suit that falls within the spectrum between the fluffy meringue dress and full on butch. Something feminine, formal enough for a wedding, not at all business suit and has that WOW factor – the ultimate bridal suit for women.
I searched Pinterest for ideas of what I wanted to incorporate, I found of a trim here or a feature there and spent a few months mulling the design over.
Once I settled on a shape I wanted to achieve, I sourced cloths. As I only work with high quality fabrics I didn’t want to resort to the typical bridal dress polyester. I chose two contrasting silks for the under layers, a textured brocade in a silk blend and plain silk satin for the trousers.
Then I worked on the shape, drafting a pattern for the mannequin (Betty) and then making a toile for the jacket from some cheaper cloth in a similar weight. From here I could tweak the fit and play with proportions and hang.
In the process I designed a hook up for the train which gives it a bustle feel as well as keeping the hem off the floor. I think if it was for a customer, the jacket could even have a lot of the train cut off post-wedding and make the jacket very usable for other occasions. I quite like the way it looks in navy also.
Here is the finished look, Betty was a huge hit at the wedding fair with so many positive comments.
