The first time Debbie spotted the grey diamond weave tweed cloth by Abraham Moon & Sons on my shelf she fell in love and immediately secured the piece just for her. Moon Cloths are one of the cloth merchants I have recently added to the shelves. They are one of the oldest mills in the UK and have a wide choice of cloths and colours ranging from the bold, almost fluorescent coatings to vintage weaves (great for reenactors). I was immediately drawn to this piece and had to have some in the studio.
We chatted about the best style for Debbie’s overcoat to enhance the pattern as well as to suit both her figure and needs. Working on a basic shape and style that we could adapt in the fitting to perfect, we toyed with having a hidden button placket, sleeve tabs and an action back pleat to compliment the closed vent. The back belt was a must for Debbie, as was focusing on the darker greys and less of the cream. This meant I needed to cut the pieces to manipulate the focus of the pattern as well as be aesthetically pleasing.
In the fitting, once the fit was tweaked, we looked at the button placket options and in the end, decided on some silver domed buttons that brought out the cool tones in the weave.
The second fitting confirmed the length and button placement and it was hand finished, complete with gemstone print lining.
I took some photos of the details of the buttonholes and (obviously) the finished overcoat. For scale, the buttonholes are about 1″ long.
